stands in some tension with the political engagement often suggested by her work, especially for the theater. […] Self-reference and autonomy do not simply mean a postmodern ‘anything goes,’ at least not in Jelinek’s case. Autonomy is a cage of meaning, a ‘prison house of musicality’ against which Jelinek’s language frantically batters as a bird against a windowpane.211

This tension of a potentially purist, escapist, self-referential musicality for its own sake and a musicality that highlights the problematics and politics of meaning-making is articulated in different ways and intensities for each author. I would like to pause on the idea of what I would call ‘gestic musicality’ for a moment.
